Just for Fun on Sun(day)

Just for fun, here is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Ladies and gentlemen, the Man in Black...Johnny Cash!

My kids love this song! My ten year old daughter refuses to believe that Johnny sings the song the whole way through because of his deep vocal range. I have it on a bizarre mix that I made a few months ago that has everything from Tom Petty to Pearl Jam to Johnny Cash. I would make a terrible DJ for sure!

BTW Father, where is your parish located? There is a family from our parish here in AZ that is moving to Kingwood,TX on Wednesday. Are you close? I told her that I frequented your blog and I would ask.

Thanks,
Katrina

Katrina,

Well, now your daughter has proof that Johnny sang the whole thing himself.

Our parish is in west Houston. It's probably about a 45 minute drive from Kingwood (Houston is huge!), so I don't know if it would be a good permanent solution, although (as I always say), if a church is thriving, it's worth the driving!

There aren't any Orthodox churches that are very close to Kingwood. There is an small OCA mission in The Woodlands, but that would be almost as far as we are. There are ROCOR and Antiochian parishes in Spring, which would probably be a half-hour away. Near downtown (again about 30 or so minutes from Kingwood on a good day), there is a Greek Cathedral and our sister Antiochian parish St. George. They'll have to resign themselves to a pretty long drive and just visit around and find the parish that they like the best.

Tell them they are welcome to email me, and that I would be glad to help them in any way that I can.

My whole family loves Johnny Cash.

I have listened to him my whole life. Did you hear his last song, the remake of "Hurt?"

My whole family loves him too--especially his early stuff. I actually have the DVD of the concert that this clip is taken from. I have indeed heard "Hurt" and seen the video (which is powerful). I like the song and the arrangement, but by the time that he recorded it, his voice had deteriorated so much, that it was (at least to me) almost unlistenable. May God rest the Man in Black's soul.

Johnny Cash...his first "American Recordings" CD is one of his best works. Indeed may God have mercy on him.

Katrina,
I hope your friends have a good move. I am a catechuman at Father James' parish. I hope your friends will give us a try as they look for a new church home. Driving long distances in Houston is pretty normal. We live in Spring,42 miles from my job, and 28 miles from the church. After my husband drops me off at work, he drives another 38 miles to his job. I will send my e-mail address to Father James along with my phone numbers so he doesn't have to dig them out from the church directory and ask him to send them along to you or your friends if he is contacted. I too would like to do anything I can to help them settle into our city. We have lived here since 1975. I always enjoy reading your commnts on the blog.

Father James,
You could probably have seen this one coming: What is ROCOR? Rambunctious Orthodox Clergy Offering Riddles? Offering Ruminations? Rascal Orthodox Clergy...? Russian Orthodox Church of ??? Pray tell.

Charlene,

You are so sweet to offer your help to them! I hope they do contact Father James.

Father James,
Thanks for all the info. Just as an FYI, their email address is from yahoo Mexico, so don't delete it as spam.

Katrina,

I'll watch for an email from Yahoo Mexico and I definitely won't delete it.

Charlene,

ROCOR is "Russian Orthodox Chuch Outside Russia." I'll tell you about them at church this Sunday if you will remind me.
